Athletes of the Week
Randall Secky of the football team put up career best numbers against Ohio on Saturday earning him the honor of UB Male Athlete of the Week. Secky detonated the Buffalo offense in connecting on 29-43 passes for 350 yards and three touchdowns in Buffalo's gut-wrenching 34-32 loss. Secky has completed near 52 percent of his passes this season and has thrown eight touchdowns.
The cross-country team's Melissa Burrows was named female athlete of the week for her performance at the Iona Meet of Champions on Saturday. Burrows was the top finisher for Buffalo at the meet. She placed 38th out of 263 runners, completing the 6K run at a time of 22:46.8. UB placed 12th in the 25 team meet, in which competitors from Wake Forest, Missouri and Yale participated.
Women's Tennis
The team competed at the St. Bonaventure Women's Tennis Fall Classic. UB freshman Kristen Ortman opened the tournament with a pair of victories to move into the finals on Sunday.
UB netted four singles victories in the final day of competition, with three coming against opponents from St. Bonaventure. Karen Maynard, Helen Lynch, Lisa Wittman, and Michaela Kollorova all recorded victories for the Bulls.
UB's doubles squads were also in action in the three-day tournament. Kollarova and Lynch combined to defeat Colleen Carey and Kendra Daigler of Niagara, 8-4, on Sunday with Maynard and Ortman downing Xer-Li Woo and Danielle Spigner of Fordham, 8-4, on Saturday.
The Bulls host local rival Canisius on Saturday, Oct. 5 at the UB Tennis Center for a 10:00 a.m. match in their next action.
X-Country
UB's women's squad finished 12 out of 25 teams this past weekend at the Iona Meet of Champions held in Van Cortland Park in the Bronx. The men finished 14th in a 26 team field in the same meet.
Jerimie Slick was the top men's performer, taking 17th out of 263 runners in the 8K race. Female Athlete of the Week Melissa Burrows finished in 38th place out of 263 in the 6K. The Bulls next meet is the LaSalle Invitational next Saturday in Philadelphia.
