Volleyball
The Bulls (2-5) lost both matches this weekend at the Quality Inn/University of Illinois-Chicago Invitational. UB lost to Iowa 3-1 in the early game on Saturday and to Binghamton 3-2 in the match later that day.
Junior Lindsay Matikosh was the top performer for Buffalo recording career highs in kills (29) and digs (23) against the Binghamton Bearcats. She is the sixth player to record over 20 kills and digs in the same match. Matikosh was the lone representative for the Bulls on the All-Tournament team.
The Bulls are now off until next Friday and Saturday, September 13 and 14, when they participate in the Syracuse Invitational. Buffalo faces Colgate on Friday at 5 pm and Brown and Syracuse on Saturday at 11 am and 7 pm, respectively.
UB (0-1) opened the 2002-2003 season with a 6-1 loss at the hands of the Niagara Purple Eagles Saturday at the UB Tennis Center.
Sophomore Michaela Kollarova, playing third singles, defeated Niagara's Colleen Willick in a tiebreaker for UB's lone point. Kollarova dropped the first set 6-4 before rallying to tie the match with a 6-4 win in the second set. The match then went to a 10-point tiebreaker to determine the winner with Kollarova taking the victory by a 10-4 score.
Buffalo will go on the road for their next match, facing St. Bonaventure on September 21 at 11:00 a.m.
X-Country
Buffalo opened the season at the Tommy Evans Invitational in Akron on Saturday. The men's team took third place in the four-team meet, missing second place by only two points and first by only four points. The women's squad placed fourth among the four teams there.
UB senior Todd Ludden won the men's individual title with his 20:05 clocking along the four-mile distance at Indigo Lake Course. Senior Jerimie Slick raced to a fourth-place individual finish in 20:21.
Leading the UB women was senior Melissa Burrows as she completed the 5,000-meter women's course in 18:54. Akron's Adriana Zalucka was the individual winner in 18:43. Freshman Lindon Wilcox and senior Christina Keck were UB's next two finishers, placing 16th (19:33) and 17th (19:41) respectively.
The Bulls next meet is at the Miami(OH) Fall Classic on September 21.
