The Bulls have a new assistant coach that will be able to provide some help with his outstanding experience.
Brandon Newill, who was the 2002 Division II national champion for the 125-pound weight class, will now be working as an assistant coach under Head Coach Jim Beichner. A graduate of Pittsburgh University at Johnstown, he will be working primarily with the lightweights on the roster.
"We are very excited to have a wrestler of Brandon's stature join the program," said Beichner. "His work ethic and desire will be an asset to our entire program and he should prove to be a great technician for our lightweight group."
The Durham Bulls one-hit the Bisons Thursday night in game three of the International League Governor's Cup Championship series, winning by a 2-0 margin in front of 5,229 hometown fans and sweeping the series 3-0. Buffalo dropped both games in Buffalo, losing 6-4 in 12 innings in game one and 8-1 in game two.
Todd Ludden
The UB men's cross-country runner has been selected as the MAC Male Scholar Athlete of the Week. Ludden is a mathematics major with a 3.36 GPA. He successfully defended his men's individual title at the season-opening Tommy Evans Invitational in Akron, Oh. last Saturday.
Athletes of the Week
Andre Forde of the football team caught three touchdown passes against Rutgers en route to a 34-11 blowout win. Forde finished with 165 all-purpose yards for the game and his two late touchdown receptions put Rutgers away for good.
Melissa Burrows of the women's cross-country team took fourth place in a 42-runner field in the season opening Tommy Evans Invitational in Akron, OH. She was able to complete the 5K course in a personal-best time of 18:34, shaving more than 40 seconds off of her last season's mark of 19:36.90.
