The UB men's swimming team finished in last place at the MAC Championships over the weekend, earning 133 points during the three-day meet in Athens, Ohio. Eastern Michigan won the meet, accumulating 777 points. Miami (Ohio) took second with 749.
The Bulls were led by freshman Aviv Oren, who broke a seven-year old school record in the 200-meter breaststroke competition. Oren turned in a mark of 2 minutes 6.50 seconds during the preliminary round, surpassing the old mark of 2:07.42 that was set in 1995 by Kevin Remaly. Oren later went on to beat his, and the new record, by turning in a time of 2:06.31 in the finals of the event, good enough for fourth place.
Oren, along with teammates Kevin Kotowski, Tony Lizauckas, and Alan Lowe, posted a season-best time of 3:10.85 in the 400-meter freestyle relay. The time bettered their previous season-best time by 1.07 seconds, but was only good enough for seventh place in the event.
Three other UB swimmers set season-best times at the championship meet. Geoff Wells set a season-best time of 2:16.10 in the 200-meter breaststroke, placing 17th in the event. Dustin Hui shaved 20 seconds off his previous best time in the 1650-meter freestyle, scoring three team points and finishing 14th. Freshman Evan McCormack finished 18th in the 200-meter backstroke, setting a season-best time of 1:57.38.
